Mark 8:15 - "Be careful," Jesus warned them. "Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and that of Herod."

Jesus spoke of three different types of yeast. They were the yeast of the Pharisees, the Herodians, and His Kingdom. He was making the point that something seemingly small could spread and affect everything it touches. Jesus is warning his disciples to watch out for the attitude of hypocrisy that existed within the Pharisees and the Herodians.

Pharisees represent RELIGIOUS INFLUENCE - Which controls through guilt, shame and judgment. Herodians represent POLITICAL INFLUENCE - Which controls through holding position of power and influence. But Jesus was establishing a Kingdom of grace, that would start small and work its way through everything by laying down His life.

So, do these two attitudes Jesus warned his followers against still exist today? Should we be on the lookout for the yeast of the Pharisees and Herod, even though they are long gone? Absolutely, because these “lies” were around way before Pharisees/Herod, and have continued on as something we must be on the watch for in our lives and communities.
