The Breath of God

The Holy Spirit once spoke to my heart and said, “If you want to have a better relationship with Me, understand your relationship with your breath.”

And then it dawned on me, Spirit, literally means breath, wind or air. It means both in the Greek and in the Hebrew language. That’s how the ancient world understood what the Spirit is and how it works. It’s everywhere, it’s abundant, it’s never lacking and it’s alway at work.

So when Jesus breathes the Holy Spirit into His disciples in John 20, everything changed. This Spirit that hovered over the deep waters in the beginning, the same Spirit that God breathe in Genesis, the same Spirit that brought life into the universe, is now living inside of them.

They’ve become inseparable with Him like the air that lives within their lungs. So now they have an anchor. Every time they took a breathe in, they were reminded that very same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead lives inside of them and are giving life to their mortal bodies. Every time they breathed out, they were releasing the very life of God in their midst.

So no matter the persecution they faced, the betrayal, the diseases, the division, the state of the world at that time, they had breathe. They had the Spirit of God within them giving them strength in every situation, helping them stand their ground.

They didn’t need their circumstances change.
They didn’t need to be broken out of prison.
It didn’t matter that Nero was emperor.
They had Breathe.
They had the Spirit of God.

And they actually believed He was in their midst even in their most difficult situation.

That’s what the grace that the Lord made sufficient for Paul.
And it’s the grace that is sufficient for us today.
The indwelling Breath of God.

The question for us today with everything that is happening around us:

  • When was the last time you became aware of the rhythm of your breath?
  • How will this understanding change your perspective with your relationship with the Spirit of God?

May you breathe in and know that the same spirit that raised Jesus from the dead is at work within and outside of you giving you strength to stand in whatever circumstances you may face.

May you breathe out and know that everything will be okay because His grace is sufficient today, everyday, now and forever, never lacking and always working.

I Forgot How to Breathe

Last week, when I was in Puerto Rico, I had an opportunity go spear fishing. Spear fishing is where you free dive with just a snorkel on and  your spear or spear gun in your hand. You have to be able to hold your breath long enough to scout the seabed, wait for a fish to come to you and release your spear.
