Your Life Matters: Becoming Salt & Light

Kim Butcher February 25, 2025

Jesus calls us to be salt and light in the world—not someday, but right now. Just as salt preserves food and enhances flavor, we are meant to bring the goodness of God into the lives of those around us.

Our lives have real value and purpose in bringing hope, truth, and life to our communities. And just like light helps guide the way in the darkness, we are meant to shine brightly, showing others the way of Jesus.

Key Takeaways:

You ARE the salt and light, right now! Jesus wasn’t saying, one day you’ll be salt and light, or when you get your life together you’ll be salt and light. He said, you ARE—right now, today. Your life is meant to bring the flavor of God’s goodness and the light of His truth into the world around you.

Salt makes things better. Just like salt takes food to the next level, your presence as a follower of Jesus should bring hope, encouragement, and life to the spaces you’re in. Your words, actions, and faith should make a difference in your family, your workplace, and your community.

Your life has purpose and value. In Jesus’ time, salt was valuable—it was used for preserving food, for trade, even as currency. So when Jesus said, you are the salt of the earth, He was saying, you matter. Your life is important, and the way you live has an impact.

Light is meant to shine, not be hidden. The world is full of people trying to navigate life in the dark—without direction, without peace, without hope. As followers of Jesus, we don’t blend in with the darkness. We shine, we lead, we reflect His goodness in a way that points others to Him.

Are you becoming salt and light? It’s easy to go through life just blending in, reacting to circumstances, or feeling like what you do doesn’t matter. But Jesus calls us to something greater. Are you bringing the flavor of God’s goodness into the world? Are you shining His light in the dark places? If not, don’t fake it—ask Him to meet you where you are and do the work in your life so that you can truly live out the purpose He has for you.
