Seeing Jesus in our Finances

Financial Prayer Team,

This last weekend, the women who attended our Face to Face conference had the honor of hearing incredible teaching and testimony. In reflection this week, the testimony of Janis continually came to my mind. She shared about the many expressions of her relationship with Jesus through the years of being a new believer, then having and raising kids and being a wife, then the release of those things into her busy career, and now looking ahead to retirement. She shared that although the seasons of her life have been many and diverse, Jesus has stayed the same. Jesus has remained her center and constant through the many changes. He is the one place she can always come to for unwavering connection.

If you heard Ryan’s sermon on Sunday, he reminded us Jesus is both the driving force and the reward for prayer. Prayer is not about what ends up happening circumstantially. It is the resulting intimacy we are after.

This is challenging me as I think about our Financial Prayer Team. We are praying specifically for church finances. In this passion and mission, are my eyes on a specific kind of result, or seeing us have increased intimacy with Jesus?

Ryan shared Colossians 4:2, “Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.”

Continually pray, having your eyes on Jesus and your heart full of thankfulness.

When I pray with my kids, particularly when they are struggling or feeling afraid, we say, “Jesus, show us where you are.” In the room, in the circumstance, in the frustration, in the celebration, in the unknown, in the worship…he is there.

I would love to pray with you this week for us to see Jesus in the finances. Let’s pray we are pulled close to him, and in intimacy he would direct our hearts first to seeing him, then to gratitude, then to partnering with him in specific revelation of his character in our church finances.

Love,

Sommer

Within our stories lies the power we need to overcome. Some of us struggle to recognize the overcoming power in our own story, as so many of them still hold loose ends, moments of intense loss, or perhaps unanswered questions. Paul so beautifully reminds us that it is “in our weakness” that Jesus is seen and made strong- and so therefore we can boast in our weakness! It is often our own stories of brokenness and pain that Jesus rides in with overcoming power.
