Honoring Covenants: Adultery, Divorce and Oaths

Ryan Rhoden March 18, 2025

In this section of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus exposed the heart behind lust, adultery, divorce, and oaths. Lust isn’t just about what we see—it’s about what we cultivate in our hearts. It’s desire that takes and consumes instead of honors. When it comes to marriage, Jesus challenges the way people treated covenant like a contract they could break when it no longer served them.

Jesus isn’t just calling us to avoid sinful actions but to address the seeds that lead there. Because what takes root in us—whether lust, anger, or deception—shapes who we become. Just as a plant grows toward sunlight, our hearts grow toward what we desire. If our desires are shaped by selfishness instead of love, we will justify behaviors that destroy relationships.

Jesus’ way is about a heart-transformed life, reshaping us from the inside out, making us the kind of people who live in truth, honor covenant, and walk in love.
